Cycle of Becoming
This series, titled “Born, Untangled, Reborn,” explores the fundamental cycle of life through a dialogue between traditional Japanese materials and contemporary supports.
The support consists of hemp canvas, upon which Hitomi layers washi, the traditional Japanese paper that symbolizes her birth country, using a unique process of her own design.
Extremely thin sheets of washi are marked with spontaneous lines, finely torn, and then gently unraveled in water.
Through this act of “breaking,” the material returns to the liminal space between order and chaos, and is eventually reconstructed into a new form as the “underlayer.”
This process of destruction and regeneration serves as a material manifestation of the “circulation of transformation,” where life continues, changing its form while remaining interconnected.
The reconstructed underlayer is applied to the hemp canvas in layers, creating a unique surface that breathes and carries a soft, undulating texture.
Acrylic paint is then applied on top, using gradients and drip techniques to capture fleeting energies and emotional nuances.
The floral motifs depict life in motion, gradually returning to stillness, rendering the interplay of vitality and quietude as a breath-like presence within each work.

The Cycle of Becoming series depicts a gentle “cycle of hope,”
in which endings and beginnings quietly connect through the process of unravelling lines of washi paper and reconstructing them onto a new foundation.
As I paused to savor each moment and worked closely with the materials,
I felt how every shift and movement—once released—naturally transforms into a new form.
We live in a world that changes quickly, where values continually evolve.
In such times, moments of transition may bring uncertainty or stir the heart.
Even so, I believe that every moment is a step toward hopeful transformation,
and I created this series with that wish in mind.
Through these works, I hope you can feel the rhythm of life in flux,
the soft yet resilient force of change,
and the quiet preciousness held within the present moment.
いのちのめぐり
このシリーズは、「生まれ、ほどけ、生まれ直す」 —— 生命の根源的な循環を、日本の伝統素材と現代的な支持体の対話を通して探求する作品群です。
支持体には麻画布を用い、その上に、作家Hitomiの出生国のルーツを象徴する“和紙”を独自のプロセスで重ねています。
極薄の和紙に無造作な線を走らせ、細かく千切り、水の中でほどく。
一度“こわす”ことで、素材は秩序と混沌のあわいへと戻り、やがて「下地素材」として新たな姿へと再構築されていきます。
この破壊と再生のプロセスは、生命が形を変えながら連なっていく「移ろうことの循環」を、物質として立ち上げる試みでもあります。
再構成した下地は麻画布の上で層を成し、呼吸するような素材感と、やわらかな揺らぎを帯びた独自のキャンバスへと昇華します。
その上に重ねるアクリルは、グラデーションやドリップの技法を用いて、感情のゆらぎや一瞬のエネルギーを留めて。
花のモチーフにはいのちが躍動し、やがて静かに還っていく姿を、熱と静寂を併せもつ呼吸として描き出しています。

「Cycle of becoming」シリーズは、線を巡らせた和紙を一度ほどき、下地材へと再構築する工程を経て、終わりと始まりが緩やかにつながっていく“希望の循環”を描いた作品です。
ひとつひとつの瞬間を味わい、素材と向き合う時間のなかで、すべての変化や動きは、静かに手放しながらも、確かに新しい姿へと生まれ変わっていくことを体感しました。
私たちを取り巻く世界は移ろいが早く、価値観も絶えず変化していきます。そのなかで、変化の瞬間に心が揺れたり、不安を覚えることもあるかもしれません。
それでも、どの瞬間も希望へと続く変容の一歩であると信じ、このシリーズに願いを込めました。
移ろいゆく生命のリズム、柔らかくも力強い変容の動き、そして“いま”という瞬間が持つ尊さを、本作を通して感じていただければ幸いです。
